Yoga is science which guides you to live in a proper way. It effects all aspects of a person: the physical, mental, lot of emotional, psychic and spiritual. The word Yoga means unity or oneness and is derived from the root ‘Yuja’ which means to join. It is the joining of the jeevatama (individual consciousness) with the parmatama (universal consciousness). Patanjali yoga is one of the six darshanas or the six systems of Indian philosophy. Saint Patanjali compiled the essential features and the principles of yoga in the form of sutras in the work known as Patanjali Yoga Sutra.
Yoga is the process of gaining control over the mind. These are the skillful subtle processes undertaken to calm the mind and not a mechanized or a gross effort to stop the thought in the mind. It is the dexterity in action and skill of performing any type of work efficiently. The balanced state of the body and the mind is known as Yoga.
Yoga was developed as a part of the “Tantra” civilization which existed in India and all parts of the world more than 10,000 years ago. In archaeological excavations made in the Indus valley at Harappa and Mohunjodaro, many statues of Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati performing various asanas (exercises) and practicing meditation were found. Shiva is said to be the founder of Yoga and Parvati his first disciple. The first works to refer to Yoga were the ancient Tantras and later the Vedas.
